Last Thursday, on the University of Tennessee campus, the Knoxville Dream Center launched its ninth food truck or mobile pantry.
Their aim is to help offset the insecurity of food among college students. A new study showed that 32% of students were food insecure in the UT system, meaning they did not have enough food or enough nutritious food.
KDC Director of Operations Ross Jones clarified that their mission is to minister to people through food. He is thrilled to expand the ministry to the campus.
“When you’re struggling with food insecurity and you’ve got to study, you’ve got to make it through the day, that’s a hard thing,” Ross Jones said to Wate.com. He also noted that several collaborations, including their key food provider, Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee, are making their outreach possible.
Another partner is Campus House of Worship or CHOP. Throughout the semester, they offered their on-campus location for the food truck every Thursday. There will be a mobile food pantry accessible from 1:30 p.m. Until 3:00 p.m.
Brooke Martin is the director of another campus ministry, Chi Alpha, and says she often sees the issue.
“I see some students aren’t really eating, when they should be or aren’t getting the opportunity to get full on a meal, or are eating really, really cheap options, or snacking all day. I don’t necessarily hear I’m hungry, but I know it’s the truth,” Martin said to Wate.com.
